Fun Workouts That Don't Feel Like Work

Sometimes a workout can feel more like a monotonous chore and less like a fun activity. If you’re ready and willing to turn up the “fun dial,” we recommend these six workouts:

  1. Play Solo Fetch: Chasing balls and frisbees isn’t just for dogs. Grab a soccer ball or frisbee and head to your favorite green space to kick that ball or throw that frisbee as far as you can. Fetch and repeat. (Tip: try to sprint every time, or at least every other time.) 
  2. Que That Beat: Create a playlist of upbeat songs that make you want to dance and then tear up your nearest makeshift dance floor. Dance like no one’s watching for a good 15-30 minutes and you’ll be out of breath before you know it.  
  3. Feel Like a Kid Again: Remember when you were little and how you tried to master the hula hoop and/or jump rope? Remaster those skills again if you’re up for an enjoyable challenge. Why? Because just 30 minutes of hula hooping a day can burn up to 200 calories, while jumping rope for 15 minutes can burn up to 300.  
  4. Conquer That Hill: When Jack and Jill climbed up the hill, it’s possible they weren’t just in it for the pail of water. Maybe they wanted a good workout! If you have any hills near your home, set a timer and see how quickly you can make it to the top. Every time you return to the hill, see if you can break your personal record.
  5. Hit the Road: Riding a bike provides excellent cardiovascular exercise. Pedal up some inclines while focusing on your breathing. Try to steadily increase how far and fast you go every time you hop on your bike.
  6. Invite a Dog Along: A dog that loves to play and go on walks can be an amazing exercise buddy. Venture onto some hiking trails with your canine pal or, if you prefer, walk or jog together around the neighborhood. Who will have more fun—you or the dog? That’s the question! 

All of these workouts help you build muscle, improve your balance and coordination, and elevate your mood but best of all, you’ll be having so much fun that you forget that you’re even working out!
